Ground-breaking in Alsdorf: construction starts on the battery park at the 110 kV substation

On 29 September 2026 construction began on the large-scale battery storage project in Alsdorf West: 5 MW of power, 13 MWh of capacity, 50 individually purchasable storage units, all of them now placed. Commissioning is planned for early 2027. What happened that day and what the start of construction means for investors.

Ground-breaking on 29 September 2026 in Alsdorf West: the founders of Copernica Partners with the management of the storage manufacturer in front of the 110 kV substation.

What happened on 29 September

On 29 September 2026 we broke ground for the battery park in Alsdorf West together with investors, prospective investors and the management of the storage manufacturer. Right next to the 110 kV substation, a large-scale battery storage system with 5 megawatts of power and 13 megawatt-hours of capacity is being built. Afterwards we toured the manufacturer's production halls, where the storage cabinets for the park are assembled.

What is being built in Alsdorf?

A storage power plant made up of 50 individual storage cabinets, each with around 261 kilowatt-hours of capacity and 100 kilowatts of power, based on lithium iron phosphate cells. The location right at the substation is the project's real advantage: a short path into the high-voltage grid, no transmission losses, and the grid connection has been contractually secured since the summer. How such a plant takes in, stores and resells electricity is explained in How does a grid-scale battery storage system work? Design, operation and revenue logic explained.

What makes Alsdorf special: the storage cabinets are sold individually to private investors. Each unit is a separate asset with its own number, not a share of a large container. For the investment deduction under section 7g of the German Income Tax Act, that is the decisive difference; the mechanics are explained in IAB under §7g EStG: example calculation for battery storage.

What happens next?

  • Construction phase from October 2026: foundations, cabling, installation of the storage cabinets and connection to the substation.
  • Commissioning in early 2027; from then on a direct marketer handles trading and optimisation of the plant.
  • As of 16 October 2026 all 50 units are sold. A follow-up project by the same developer with around 120 units is in preparation.

What does this mean for investors?

For Alsdorf the subscription window is closed: as of today all 50 units are sold, and the buyers receive their storage cabinets with commissioning in early 2027. Anyone who claimed an investment deduction in 2023 must have invested by the end of 2026; for that, units in other projects remain available, for example in an agri-PV park commissioned in December 2026 and in decentralised swarm storage. Which unit fits your situation is something we check in a non-binding initial consultation. We do not make any return guarantees.
